Adopt a Shark

Don’t know what to give friends and family for their birthdays this year? You can always “adopt” an animal on their behalf from the World Wildlife Fund.

According to the WWF, your gift “will help protect the future of nature. Your symbolic adoption supports WWF’s global efforts to protect wild animals and their habitats.” Although there are other adopt-an-animal programmes, I think that the WWF is probably the most recognized, and they fund research and conservation efforts worldwide.

This week because it’s Shark Week on Notes from Africa, I am suggesting you adopt a Great White Shark. Click on this link for more information.

For all those shark lovers out there, I challenge you to put your money where your mouth is!

Although I don’t generally support charities run by mammals, this seems to be a worthy cause. But maybe they should just campaign against Japan’s “Shark Fin City”.

It must be mentioned that the WWF Adoption Kit includes a stuffed shark toy – for all those of you who cannot resist soft furry things – and a toothy fan poster.

“Stuffed shark” – now I assume that’s meant in the post-prandial and not the taxidermic sense …
