No pain

I woke up this morning with no pain. Nada. Not a twinge. For those that don’t know my story, I live with chronic pain. In the summer months I have daily headaches and migraines. I live with a spectrum of pain, which affects everything I do, and affects my family and friends. Pain changes who I really am. The medication I have to take dulls me and saps my energy. Today though I woke up happy and positive and full of energy. A pain-free period is such a rare occurrence that it deserves to be blogged about. I’m going to have a great day!

Calla or Arum Lily. One of my favourite flowers. Just love the simple elegance of this flower. ©LB/notesfromafrica.wordpress.com

    Have a wonderful day, Lisa.

    • January 17, 2012 at 6:36 am #

Thank you, Heather! It turned out to be one of the hottest days here this summer, so I couldn’t go running around. Just having a clear head and energy to do things indoors was great though.

So glad to hear that you woke up with no pain. Hope it stays this way!

    • January 17, 2012 at 6:40 am #

It was really amazing to wake up with a clear head and so much energy. Like flicking a switch from how I was feeling when I went to bed the night before. As you know, it never last long, but I’ll take what I can get.

Lisa, I totally thrilled for you. Not only are you painfree, but you won’t have to take the damn pain meds that dull you. I can’t wait to hear how the day turns out. Keep us posted—-
    Hugs,
    Kathy

Thanks Kathy! You can probably appreciate more than most, how medication dulls you. I had a lovely day, but as it was one of the hottest days of the summer, had to stay indoors.

Beautiful image for your day. Have a great day.
PS I love the lily…Diego Rivera paints them so beautifully.

    • January 17, 2012 at 7:11 am #

Thanks Georgette! I had to go and look for Diego Rivera paintings online. Although I had seen some of his other work before, I hadn’t seen the Calla Lily paintings. How wonderful – thanks for mentioning it.

Lisa, I had NO idea that you were suffering from chronic pain — I would NEVER know that from your positive, upbeat blogs and your beautiful photography! I can’t believe you do all the things that you do with that pain dragging you down … such a great feeling to be FREE of it! Happy day, Lisa!!

    • January 17, 2012 at 7:43 am #

Thanks Betty! I made a conscious decision when I started this blog that I wanted it to be my “happy place”. Somewhere I could come to share the things that interest, amuse or inspire me. What I’ve found it that it works very much like a gratitude journal. The more I blog about positive things, the less depressed I get. It also helps me to share my “better side” with family and friends, who often have to deal with me when I’m feeling depressed and negative.

So happy to hear that today is a good day. Often I don’t appreciate my good health until I get a migraine (not nearly as debilitating as yours). May you have many pain free days ahead.

PS – have you ever read the essay titled, In Bed by Joan Didion? She can describe the feeling of having migraine to a T!

      • January 17, 2012 at 7:50 am #

I hadn’t read it, but managed to find a copy online last night. Wow – I could have written it! Thanks for mentioning it.

    • January 17, 2012 at 7:48 am #

Thanks for the good wishes, Jackie! 🙂 I also forget each winter, how brutal and unpleasant the summers get. Probably a good thing.

rejoicing in AZ that you are pain free today 🙂

Great to hear! I have suffered from chronic neck and back pain since I was thirteen and had a terrible bout of severe pain late this summer/early fall. I actually wrote a post on it on my other blog, Diary of a Happy Mom. I am so with you that living in pain is terrible. You feel awful, can’t be cheerful and are short-tempered. I thankfully did some serious physical therapy and for once in my life, after all these years, my neck is much better and I am headache free! So perhaps I don’t have the extent of pain you are dealing with but I hear you. I am so glad you feel GREAT!!!!! Have a good day and I hope you remain pain-free for a long time! P.S. My sister has migraines too and they have never quite determined the cause but suspect it is hormone related. WHo knows?!

    • January 18, 2012 at 7:11 am #

I’ve only had two episodes of acute back pain, and even with my high pain threshold, I found it difficult to cope with. Pain in your head affects a lot of things too (sight, balance, ability to concentrate), but when my back was sore, I couldn’t move at all! I’m going to check out the post on your other blog. It’s difficult for people who rarely experience pain to understand chronic pain, so I appreciate it when fellow sufferers send messages of support. 🙂

Your sister’s migraines aren’t perhaps environmentally triggered? Any environmental change or extreme can trigger a migraine for me. Heat, humidity, changing barometric pressure, strong sunlight. Environmental migraines are notoriously difficult to treat. How frequently does your sister get a migraine?

As promised, the Japanese tribal member came for another visit. Sorry to hear about your battle with pain, but happy that you had a good day! I find myself wondering whether acupuncture would help for migraines …

Thanks for the arum lily. More memories!

PS: Put some sunshine in an envelope and send it to Tokyo. We’re freezing! (>_<)

    • January 18, 2012 at 7:14 am #

Ha! My brother, who lives in Northern Europe, says we should build a heat-exchange pipeline between NE and Africa!

I have tried a lot of different alternative therapies for the migraines. Nothing worked – possibly because I have had neurological problems since birth?

  17. January 18, 2012 at 8:04 am #

Oooh! Did you do anything different? Eat or not eat anything different yesterday? I wonder if you can recreate everything that led up to this? Yay for being pain free! I know how precious those days are. I have FM myself. Hope you enjoyed your day!

    • January 19, 2012 at 5:45 am #

I had a great day, thank you! 🙂 The migraines I get are environmentally triggered, so unfortunately I have little control over them. The two days before I woke up pain free had been cooler with a stable barometric pressure. So that definitely helped.

  18. January 18, 2012 at 3:47 pm #

I hope your pain-free day was brilliant, and that you have more soon.

  19. January 24, 2012 at 12:43 pm #

Awesome! I hope you continue to be pain free.
